Paulo Freire was born on September 19, 1921. Freire was appointed Director of Cultural Extension of Racife University in the year 1961. He taught 300 sugarcane workers to read and write in just 45 days in 1962. The Brazilian Government approved the creation of thousands of cultural circles across the country in response to this experience. In 1964, a military coup stopped that effort and imprisoned him for 70 days.
Frerie came out with his first book, Education as the Practice of Freedom in the year 1967. His most famous book was published in 1968 and was called Pedagogy of the oppressed, it was published in Portugese.
In the city of Sao Paulo, Paulo Frerie joined the Workers Party (PT). From 1980-1986 he acted as a supervisor for the (PT) adult literacy project. In 1988 the (PT) was prevailed in the municipal elections and Frerie was appointed Secretary of Education for Sao Paulo. Paulo Frerie died on May 2nd, 1997.
